She's booked New York left and right (here she is at Hervé Leger) and shows no signs of stopping. It is even rumored that she has opened Calvin Klein today, the most watched show in terms of casting.
She is beautiful. She is pretty. She is pale. She is pencil thin. Look at her!
(Yawn.)
I know I'm beating a dead horse, but haven't we seen enough anemic Eastern European androids?
Yeah, I guess I am a bit bothered.
Her ubiquitous success is almost alienating
I'm not saying she looks bad.
I'm not saying she's ugly.
I'm not saying she's mean.
I'm not saying she's a bad model.

I'm just saying I'm bored.

So, NYFW...
For the most part, it's been alright.
Not great. Not bad.
However, some designers (expected, and unexpected) have shown knockouts, and, more importantly, fearlessness in the face of hard times.
It's reassuring! Refreshing!
BE JUBILANT!
These collections stand out to me for new reasons.
I can feel my tastes changing.
Aside from having innate beauty and general cohesiveness, they all communicate times, places, people, things.
However, when worn, these intricate references melt away and you (the wearer) just look good.
That's fashion, I guess.
My picks (thus far) are as follows.

Alexander Wang
Wang has a formula...and honestly? It works every time (with subtle changes of course). The collection was all hardcore nineties minimalism (vet models included!) with an aggressive, downtown edge. It wasn't pretty, but that's not to say it wasn't desirable.

Altuzarra
Joseph Altuzarra is the new kid in town. He's worked for Proenza and Givenchy, but his debut solo effort exuded something all it's own. His separates and cocktail dresses were minimal and futurist, but also undeniably sexy. His work with draping was also subtly innovative. This is restraint that translates, and I can't wait to see more.

Carolina Herrera
Carolina's collection made me just so happy. You can't help but think of the woman herself when you think of the Carolina Herrera brand, and I could just feel that knowing aura of aristocracy she exudes when taking in her gorgeous effort for fall. The fabrics were impossibly lush, and there was also an expert mix of debutante and matron in terms of the silhouettes. Call it the bourgeoisie in me, but this sort of assured maximalism is something I live for.

Donna Karan
Move aside. Donna Karen's Office Dominatrix is back witha a vengeance, and you're not worth her time. Back to the coffee machine!

Doo.Ri
Brooding, sleek, sensuous...and wearable? Miss Chung surprised me with a chic black and white collection that is, above all else, extremely covetable.

Hervé Leger
Okay, yeah, I know, right? Hervé Leger. Cut it some slack! This was brazenly sexual...but with a conscience. Azria used colors (earthtones!), textures (braiding?!), and shapes (uni-shoulder pads?!?!) that one would seldom associate with all the Hollywood, form-fitting va-va-voom that the brand entails. Hot.

Hutson
Oh, the Hutsons. How do I love thee! The husband and wife duo's new line (formerly known as Daughters) hit all my soft spots. The color palette was dank, but chic dank (there IS such a thing, mind you). The materials were intensely luxurious and the silhouettes smart, retro, and very Parisian. What's not to love? I hope they never let the pressures of womenswear (they formerly did only mens) hinder their panache for tailoring.

Jenni Kayne

Jenni Kayne is always the same. Such is my love!

Michael Kors
This was a surprise. Most of the time, I almost like Kors, but this collection really resonnated. It was similar to Donna Karan in that it was all about what Kors refered to as "pragmatic luxury", and definitely evoked a powerful, wealthy woman. However, all this practicality had a large dosage of fun to counter it. Three acid-colored fur chubbies felt, rather than perverse, exuberant and daring. The man makes beautiful clothes, but his true dedication to America's jetset is what really shines through and appeals.

Oscar de la Renta
Call him stuffy and call him old guard, but ODLR knows what he's doing. While some of his designs verge on the dated, his color palette, craftmanship, and dedication to the world's womwn of distinction are what make his collections seem not only appropriate, but also quite beautiful. This yellow piece is a sculptural knockout, and this rich color sensibility with accents of gold carried itself throughout the entire collection. The discreet charm of the bourgeoisie gone bold.

Rodarte
I don't think I could really ever truly hate a Rodarte collection, just because I love THE MULLEAVYS so much. The boots were a bit silly, but the frocks and jackets are what made this ethereal, organic collection work. The sillhouette for the dresses (short and sexy) was a tad too rigorous, but the intrigueing marbled fabrics that they were constructed from elevated something potentially tarty to a higher ground of intellectualism. The knit fringing on the jackets was delightfully barbaric. I was reminded of Björk's Homogenic, if you were looking for a reference point. (PSH.)

Victoria Beckham
Give Poshies some credit, okay? Or at least her deign team. It was well-made. It was chic. It was cutting edge. It was (mostly) classy. I'm telling you, HER collection was better than some of our fashion vets'...and I kid you not.

She's 26. She's also Indian...not to mention smart as hell. Exemplary.

15. Natalia ChabanenkoAndrogyny and sexiness coexisting to a superlative.

14. Kim NoordaShe's looks like some vampy cartoon...it shouldn't work...but it does.

13. Agyness Deyn
I care not what you say. She is an excellent model with tangible personality...albeit a shitty celebrity.

12. Karen ElsonThe redhead editorial queen of yesterday!

11. Olga ShererThe redhead runway queen of tomorrow!

10. Sessilee LopezSessiee's got sass...and isn't afraid to be a little old school in editorials. She also just HAPPENS to be dating Kanye.

9. Magdalena FrackowiackFuck, she is sexy.

8. Elsa Sylvan She looks delciously evil...and is limitlessly versatile. I love the sharpness of her face.

2.Georgina StojiljkovicHer face is a miracle. The lips, the cheekbones, the nose...plus a killer body? She is a baroque painting. If someone gave me a lump of clay and asked me to sculpt the ideal face, this'd be it.

1. Lara StoneLara is epic in every way. Her body is perfect, in my opinion. And her lips, her teeth! Her face is the sublime synthesis of old-world glamor and cutting edge, bitchy futurism. Yes, she has curves. Yes, she has wonky teeth. She just doesn't give a fuck! And she still books jobs! And campaigns! Vogue Paris is dedicating their next issue to her! Go Lara!

Happy new year, everyone.
It is 2009.
It's time to start blogging again. Yes. Yes!
Things got stressful, I lost focus...let's be terse.
However, I'm getting more and more assiduous with both my writing and my study of fashion...
...so if not for you, then for me, guys. Sophomore year has been a challenge, to say the least. I barely have time to check all of my blogs! Le gasp! In other news, I've recently joined this online forum: ONTD_FASHINFAGS. Now, before you judge me, the name is more less satirical and the community is actually great for discussion upon all array of recent fashion news...and the like. Gay boys, straight boys, straight girls, gay girls...it's a pretty diverse community despite the silly moniker. I've also joined The Fashion Spot, an invitation- only online community for the sartorially inclined. It's pretty expansive, and I'm more than a little intimidated. However, I am more than comfortable blogging. More soon.

It would seem that the model is on the rise.
Girls like Coco Rocha and Agyness are part of a new guard of recognizable beauties with bubbly, marketable personalities beneath their runway scowls.
Every season, a few lucky, lanky, languid ladies claw their way into the hearts of casting directors and debut as runway regulars...or better yet, elusive exclusives for fashion's elite.
This season, a mixture of ex-exclusives, underrated vets, and brand new girls fresh off the boat all had supadupaFLASHHDANNCEEbreakout moments in the spotlight.
Mmm.
Coincidentally, I chose favorites.
Here they are...oh, destiny...

Sarah Blomqvist

The epitome of frigid elegance, Sara Blomqvist lent her imposing presence to the Christopher Kane, Alexender McQueen, and Givenchy runways...to name only a few. I see some cinematic editorial moments in her future.

Stephanie Carta
Australia's newest installation, Stephanie Carta possesses an edgy, intellectual beauty. She remained a Balenciaga exclusive for the past few show seasons...perhaps there's a campaign in her future?

Kineé Diouf
While she's been modeling for a while now, Kineé Diouf hit her stride this season, walking for Proenza Schouler and Lanvin. Her exotic features and beautiful skintone (awe-inspiring on the runway) are sure to land her plenty of reputable bookings.

Naty Chabanenko
Fresh from a Prada/Miu Miu exclusive last season, Naty's ethereal presence was in all the right places: from Rodarte to Louis Vuitton...and Prada, of course. With Meisel having already lensed her for one of his edgiest editorial in years, Naty is off to an extraordinary start.

Lakshmi Menon
Lakshmi, the exotic Indian beauty, hit model stardom at a very un-stardom-y age: 28. Her womanly aura floored casting directors across the board, landing her key bookings at Ralph Lauren, Givenchy, and Hermés. With Paris Vogue already having signed on and a Givenchy campaign running in magazines now, one can only speculate upon what's next.

Sophie Srej
In New York, Sophie nabbed the Calvin Klein exclusive, instantly putting her in spotlight. She remained strong in the elite castings, booking Prada in Milan. Sophie's brand of simultaneous edginess and timelessness is sure to catch the eye of avant garde publications like i-D. as well as glossy staples like Harper's Bazaar or Elle.

Ymre Stiekema
The seasons undoubted sphinx, the enigmatic Ymre appeared as a strict exclusive in the Prada show, not even appearing at Miu Miu as the Prada exclusives usually do. As her ethereal Prada resort ads are running in magazines now, there's is a great possibility that this powerful beauty may fill the void that Sasha Pivovarova's Prada contract expiration opened. Miu's new muse?

Sessilee Lopez
Sessilee, another modeling vet, was the name on everyone's lips this past season, booking everyone from Fendi to Vivienne Westwood to Lanvin...not to mention Marc Jacobs. Her classic beauty defies any "ethnicity trend", and having already been featured in starmaking editorials in V and Vogue Italia, she's bound for even more.

MFA - Prada Don't Preach

Whether I ultimately love it or hate it, the Prada collection is, for me, one of the most highly anticipated shows of any given season.
Miuccia Prada is at the top of her game, the Queen of Milan...and in my opinion, a genius.
Whenever I have an adverse reaction to her clothing, rather than wrinkle my nose with a haughty nasal exhalation (I'm talking to YOU, Galliano), I take a moment to consider why she's made her choices...what her motivation is.
This season...well, I'd call it debatable.
I don't like it.
I don't dislike it.
It's light, airy, and summery, yes...but unsubstantial on the whole.
I'd feel pretty naked wearing them, myself.
The gold dress below is the gem of the collection for me...and the separates are pretty darn visionary...
...but otherwise?
You've got me stumped, Miu.

MFW - Raf and Jil Went Up The Hill

Raf Simons is easily one of my favorite designers.
He never strays from the clean, simple, elegant, and intellectual.
I know I rattle off these words like Rei Kawabuko rattles off non sequiters, but these are some integral qualities, in my world, of how a woman should dress.
What I like about Raf is that his conservative minimalism never limits the sex appeal...this woman is showing you less than she's keeping from you, and she knows it.
This woman is on top...
...yet it never feels butch, or overtly masculine.
This season, Raf pulled out the fringe, using the sexy motif to a sultry degree that never felt cheap...albeit just a wee bit body-con. The rest of the collection was familiar Jil Sander-cum-Raf, fare: conservative, intensely luxurious shifts, button up waistcoats, and a few innovative suits.
Just genius.

Best taken with chamomile and a knowing smile.

Thank goodness.
If I saw another jump suit I was gonna flagellate my self.

MFW - Ferré's the Day

The epitome of the chic inside my head.
My fashion rants realized.
My favorite collection of the season...

GIANFRANCO FERRÉ IS FUCKING INSANE.

Yes, I know. It got good reviews and all...but I thought it was the season's absolute knockout collection, especially for a debut. The Aquilano Rimondi boys churned out a sharp, futurist collection rich in innovative materials, luxurious detail, classic cuts, stark color, couture-like embellishment, and general high-fashion daring.

The shoes? The protractor shoes? The accessory of the season...by far.

How can I begin to describe the brilliance and level of sophistication this collection embodied?

I'll just show you.

The architecture, color, and intrinsic savvy of the clothing speaks for itself. It is intellectual, flattering, and luxurious.

It's St. Laurent, it's Mugler, it's Balenciaga.

It's Bronze Age, Modern Age, Space Age.

It's day. It's night.

It's extraordinary.

As far as I'm concerned...

...this is near-perfect fashion.

MFW - Arguing Armani

But clothes, yes, clothes.
This is why I'd like to argue a case...the case of Emporio Armani.
It's not getting written up.
It's not getting raves.
It's not getting buzz.
Gasp!
A DIFFUSION LINE?
Honestly, though?
It's just good.
These clothes are wearable and smart. They're not showy or avant-garde, they simply make a woman look like she knows her shit. It's inspiring, minimal, tasteful, sharp, and casual.

Isn't that something to celebrate?

These separates are so simple, so effortless...with no real pretentions of "minimalism". Armani is vastly unappreciated and makes me wonder...

when an editor decrees a collection as "intellectual"...

...what does that really mean?

MFW - Spring Mix

I've arrived at the conclusion that it's just far too time-consuming to detail every show I happen to take a shine to.

Some yes, yes of course.

But I must filter!

The capital of luxury and "va-va-voom", as they say, yielded some chic, intellectual, and just plain innovative takes on Spring and Summer fashion this time around. Let's have a look.

Dolce and Gabbana

All that is lovely rolled into one: architecture, luxury, quirk, and color. Though Dolce is always solid on the accessories, I feel as though these dresses could speak volumes unadorned in modest heels and nothing else...perhaps a pearl necklace? Think Balenciaga.The cut, texture, and coloring on all three are the stuff of dreams, it's purely appealing. I suppose Dolce succeeded in attaining Minnie Mouse chic where Zac Posen epically failed.

Fendi

Oh, Karl. You do know what I like. While I could have lived without theose awkward corset-belt-donut contraptions seen throughout the show, I was otherwise impressed. That first piece on Mariacarla has sick lines and a wicked neckline...and in one of my favorite (nonexistent) colors! It reminds me somehow of fashion's collarbone fetish. Jut 'em out, m'dears. I love that little slip of chiffon on the hem of dresses that I've been seeing...that little whisper. And the second piece? If I were a woman of privelage, a KEPT woman of privelage, I'd right poisin my husband to wear that to the funeral.
I am wretched. Yes, yes I am.

Marni

Who doesn't love Marni? My mum picked up some Marni wedges on sale a month or so ago, they were extraordinary. Too bad one of them broke.
Lesson of Ze Day: DON'T WEAR MARNI WHEN WALKING ABOUT IN BOSTON'S NORTH END.
Marni's newest effort upholds that ecclecticism that has become the house's sigature over time, an exuberant choice for the thinking woman of taste. Here are a few gems from Spring's kooky show, the first being probably the most pared down, minimal ensemble shown. I absolutely love it. The rich fabrics, the cool coloring, the belted waist, the sharp shoulders, the severe black tights...and that exquisitely exotic necklace just pulls it all together. Genius and refined. As for that last look...
Well, could you possibly say no to that?
Mary-Kate, I'm talking to you, dear. It's Oscar season and my expectations are high.

LFW - Penny, Nicoll, Dime

Minimalism is hard to nail.

It's easy to do wrong, easier to do drably.

I've swooned over the luxurious, severe takes at Calvin Klein and Jil Sander...

But is there room for fun?

I suppose, in ways, I'm just letting go this season. I'm becoming less of a cold Spartan bitch than I was before!

Huzzah!

Richard Nicoll, with his saturated, tailored, and actually quite minimalist sportswear, has allowed an easy transition to take place. I still love a good 'ol gray sheath...but I suppose hot pink can be just as well.

To sum it up:

Color Blocking + Slouchy Men's Tailoring + Origami Headpieces=Key to My Pants

Crop the jacket, stick a hot pink tent under it. Yes, please.

Flattering and intrigueing. The psychology here reminds me of Comme des Garcons from two seasons ago.

Peaches are delicious, epecially in silk with some matching torusers.

LFW: Get Me Lain, Christopher Kane

Cue the carnal moans.

British enfant terrible and general genius, Christopher Kane, turned out a Spring collection that was, at once, conceptual, pretty, hard-edged, wearable, and couture-like.

It was back all the way to prehistory for Kane, portrayed with fiendish literalness through leopard-print sweaters and ape-screened tee dresses (see below) as well as through subtle reference with a beauty all its own. He layered scallopped, sheer organza in vibrant colors to form a sort of dinsauric armor on both dresses and separates...and that's not even to mention the men's tailoring. Christopher Kane continues to remain at the top of my list.

Call me?

This is pure innovation. The wild, circle-cut technique proves to be quite, flattering actually. The pants are destined for ubiquity.

At first glance, I thought these were made of paper...but I think it's actually scallopped organza. Either way, these strange minis are both intellectual and brazenly sexual. The gimmick is there, yes, but I feel Kane takes it a step farther to create, well, actual clothing. The architecture of the black ones is the stuff of dreams, while Sessilee's is all about sizzling color and pattern. Oh, indeed.

The layering here is particularly rad. Edgy and sweet.

It's Britain for me, I says.

LFW - For The Love of Basso & Brooke

London Fashion Week, moreso than any of the others, is about eccentircity and fun.

Dismiss eccentricity, opt for chic basics.
Dismiss fun, clomp about in your stilettos.

What if you, though, could have it all?

In one of my favorite collections of the season thus far, the ingenious Basso & Brooke have taken eighties redux to dramatic, artistic, and graphic new heights.

The collection, ripe with vibrant cinched-waisted pantsuits and kimono-style day dresses, is loud, yes, and very colorful...but these clothes possess a sense of madcap intricacy that is seldom found among the present's recession-minded collections. Here are some absolute highlights, and be sure not to miss any I've already posted.

Oh, for joy!

Vlada turned it out, garbed in this explosive opener. The only words that come to mind are comic book superlatives and onomatopoeias.

A look whose impact is outlandishly disproportional to the ease taken in wearing it. Picasso does neons. Oh, to think!

A simpler look with a structured yet organic accordion affect. The beautiful belt pulls it all together with aplomb.

A simple, in comparison, day dress in the familiar sillhouette. Even without some outlandish print about the whole thing (in comparison), the actual design of the garment itself translates with ease. Spot-on for summer.

I just adored the colors and the campy print. So unabashedly eighties! It reminds me of "Fruit of the Loom"...in th best of ways, mind you.

Peggy Guggeheim turns in her grave.

I adore the Brito-sih print on the pants...and the shirt looks like something out of Lacroix Haute Couture. It's all a complete non sequiter, from the waves to the belt...yet it works.

Just lovely.

Sheer, in all of it's delightfully exhibitionist manifestations was, indeed, ubiquitous at New York Fashion Week...

...but it didn't get truly interesting until London.

Armand Basi One - Innovative sportswear! Such a rare treat. The beige sheer look is a subversively sexual and altogether very minimal delight with a dash of futurism, care of that fabulous necklace. Seen below, Sessilee's half sheer gray jersey paired with the azure sequined slacks is graphic glee. It's fun and daring and just cool. It pushes the wearability envelope without slobbering all over it, a difficult feat.

Christopher Kane - Never shall I cease to sing the praises of this collection. This end-of-show stunner is intensely sexual in a markedly cerebral, Parisian sort of way. The meek need not apply...nor the tarty.

Christopher Kane - My favorite Fall collection thus far witnessed London's fashion prodigy (and my future husband) combining the jovial and cerebral with head-turning renditions of prêt-à-porter classics with smart couture twists. A trendier piece of the collection, this ape-screened A-line dress is instantly one of the seasons most recognizable. The likes of Aggy, Iekeline, and other young haute eccentrics are sure to take notice. The second looks is a more subjective take on animalism, the orange sheer cut sections layering like a dinosuar's armour. Inspiring.

Eley Kishimoto - A new discovery. It's not what one would call "chic" necessarily, but I fell hard for this young British label's gleeful, almost juvenile prints and fearless color use. Lizards? Cute? I know...oh, and don't forget that poisonous dart frog babydoll shift with matching (or utterly mismatching) tights. Eye candy, mmm.

Whether it be my love of androgyny or the fact that I myself have an X chromosome, I love it when men's tailoring is applied to womenswear. It gives a woman the visual power and impact that has long been associated with us dreary, hairy, and smelly males. While no longer necessarily a scandalous thing (unless your name is Celine Dion), masculine womenswear exudes a hint of irreverence and aggression, one of those intangible attitudes that exemplify why fashion is Fashion. For spring and summer, designers replaced the winter coats with sharp tuxedo ones and some other beautifully butch spearates.

Alexander Wang - Grunge is back. See: your dad's closet.
Daughters by Obedient Sons - While the design team originally did work only in menswear, these tomboyish and often very austere looks remind of Orwellian utopias and futuristic communes. Oh, and the florals are rad. The men's version shall be mine.
Malo - Sigh. Always putting our Freja in the androgynous pieces. I bet she dreams of frilly pink babydoll dress. The prints on this second suit, however, are themselves the stuff of dreams...or acid trips. Freja might know.
Tommy Hilfiger - What Sally the Trophy Wife wears to divorce court to prove her independance from David the Mogul. Sally gets everything. You go Sally!

NYFW - In There Like Swimwear

Seeing swimwear of all garments on a model (especially if that model is Olga Sherer) can either make you dismiss the garment as overly bodycon or give you unfortunate delusions of grandeur. While haute swimwear isn't for everyone, you certainly don't want to be caught in a tye-dye Speedo onesie while sipping your Sangria on the shores of the Riviera. These two particularly innovative bathing suits from Yigal Azrouël and Hervé Léger prove that you can't, in fact, be too rich or too thin.

Hervé Léger - Accentuate those curves of yours (though Olga is struggling) with this wrapped piece best worn poolside with some Loubs.

Yigal Azrouël - A more practical approach, this progressive take on the bikini takes attention away from the problematic tummy area while still packing some serious two-piece sexiness.

NYFW - The Joseph Syndrome

Just the other night, for Mr. Weintraub's deliciously challenging Honors English course, I was assigned to read the story of Joseph in the book of Genesis. With Donnie Osmond's face firmly set in my mind, I took in the tale of Jacob (son of Isaac, grandson of Abraham...oh my...) and his golden boy: envied for his coat of many colors. So will be America's discerning ladies this spring and summer, designers having just shown a soaring rainbow of vivid hues on runways. Er. WHAT recession?

Isaac Mizrahi - Looking into my Crayola crayon box, I'd expect least of all for Macaroni and Cheese to be used tastefully. Thanks, Isaac.

Jonathan Saunders - The saturated colors and divine geometric prints and patterns should have landed this talented Brit the Pucci contract. Seriously.

Marc Jacobs - The stripes are hynotizing me into sleep while the yellows, purples, and blues are simultaneously waking me. Only with Marc, I say.
Naeem Khan - This exuberant sheath is just FLOORing. I can only describe it by saying that it puts me in my happy place. There are rainbows galore and fountains of grape juice and benign, omniscent unicorns who are my friends. Please don't look at me like that.
Rodarte - My beloved Mulleavy sisters have done it again! This beautifully draped A-line frock's shock of rosy purple and spunky chain detailing make for an ethereal synthesis of hard and soft.

Closest to this dear 'ol heart 'o mine is the minimalist aesthetic. Please do not ask me why, or I shall rant myself off the cliff of some terrifying philopsihcal tangent. Basically: it always works and showcases you.
There is a certain intellectuality about an oversized black T-shirt and black jeans that you just can't extract from a Hawaiian button-up.
While last season's Minimania has died down a bit (unless you want to argue that sheer is a form of minimalism...), there were still some ingeniously understated and chic pieces shown for the warm months.

Ports 1961 - Tied with Cynthia Rowley for Fashion Week's most epic belt.

Alexander Wang - Classic Wang execution of masculinity and volume play. Anyone wanna pick me up some leather ciggie pants?

Calvin Klein - While my dear Francisco's show occaisionally missed the mark with its awkward volumes, these white tailored pieces were winners. The first frock is perfectly crisp, conceptual, and stark while the Pierrot top adds a touch of drama rarely seen from the master.

Hanii Y - This girl's cute and furuistic ensembles are highly underrated and underexposed.

Hervé Léger - Where brilliant design meets sex on heels.

Kai Kühne - Now you can instill sartorial intimidation even during heatwaves!

Michael Kors - Light and breezy with a vibrant, voluminous twist. Those priceless PR quips seem not to be his ONLY gems! Oh, please impale me.

Malo - This sensationally edgy tiered structure with a whipser of chiffon at the hem looks pretty darn bueno to me. No really, stone me. This must end!

Marc Jacobs - While subdued respites from the genius' deliciously kooky collection were few, they were brilliant as well. Here's Marc's contemporary spin on St. Laurent-style power dressing.

Narciso Rodriguez - I'm sure these overtly sexual bandage dresses from Narciso's uncharacteristically fun collection elicited cascades of drool from Victoria Beckham's pursed lips.

Oscar de la Renta - This guy just gets it. The epitome of privelage and class is he! Michelle Obama, are you listening? Anyway, it would go without saying that "Oscar Does Color Blocking/Tailored LBD" would yield some pretty fabulous results.

Threeasfour - A cerebral take on the T-shirt. Gimme.

Tommy Hilfiger - This nautical and voluminous belted coat eptiomizes understated luxury.
Yigal Azrouël - 'Cause I'm a sucker for a high waist and a sharp cut and a stark pallette. I should lighten up, I should.

Amazonian Indian beauty Lakshmi Menon TORE APART the catwalk this past week, booking, among others: Alexnder Wang, Diane von Furstenberg, Michael Kors, and she also CLOSED Ohne Titel.
Strangely enough, more than a few of my favorite looks were worn by her.
Seriously, ya'll. No bias here! These would have been favorites with or without her.
It's a bizarre coincidence, what with a gaggle of some fifty or so top models booking jobs and around thirty to thirty five looks on average for each show...you do the math because I certainly won't!
It's so good to see a twenty-seven year old exotic beauty with a shining presence book these shows rather than another 12-year-old Russian tope stick figure.

I always seem to blog about Elise's photos, but really now! In terms of looks, she's not necessarily a complete "standout"...but her presence on film is SO dynamic and consistently pitch perfect to the editorial she stars in (or STEALS).
From afar, I would think this a humanist portrait from the sixteenth century. Aesthetics aside, she makes the simple white blouse look like a delicate lotus. The painterly romance of this photograph is just awe-inspiring!

Yes, I'm aware that this means "clothes".
It also, as we know means models.
I find it fascinating to keep in-tune with these lanky beauties, see who's setting the standards and why. I've taken a look at all of the show packages from the agencies, and here are my predictions for who are to be this season's overnight successes. Everyone seems to be making these lists, but hear me out. These girls are new, and, obviously, not necessarily established. My instincts are sound...I hope...
Georgina

Yes, I've sung the praises of Georgina before, but this is her season. After sweeping Haute Couture week in July, she's poised for a no-prisoners, four-city explosion.
Naty

After spending last season as Miuccia's slave for exclusively Miu Miu and Prada (which she opened and closed), her chiseled androgyny is JUST feminine enough to translate to every major couturier.
Loris

She's brand new, but I'm positive she'll make waves. Loris is equal parts Brazilian sex godess and edgy androgyne, an unlikely combination. That, and her killer pout, will put her in instant demand.
Karolina

Karolina's eerie, spindly elegance will earn her favor within the ranks off fantasy-minded designers like Alexander McQueen and Nina Ricci.
Yordanos

When voluptuous lips meet elven features which then mix with ethnic ambiguity and then coincide with a decidedly icnonic moniker, you really can't go wrong.
Svea

Svea's nearly inhuman, cartoonlike features will earn her top marks from avant-garde-ists like Rei Kawabuko and Vivienne Westwood. Her strange look may not translate, but they said that about Masha Tyelna...
Rhama

Ethnicity trend aside, Rhama's elegance is undeniable.
Sarah

An intrigueing face matched with a gleaming hipster sensibility will carry Sarah to the doorstep of all designers who look for a bit of sass and personality in the casting room.
Xiya

Xiya's interplanetary sophistication shrieks "blue-chip!".
Hannah

Hannah's haunting and subdued mystique matched with her considerable height (6 feet!) will make for a angelic presence on the runway.
Lakshmi

An Indian icon is long overdue in today's modeling world. With Gaultier and, most notably, Ricardo Tisci at Givenchy singing her praises, she's bound for stardom with the top of the crop.
Dominika

Though we've seen the powerful likes of Dominika before, they've never looked THIS expensive! Power houses like Yves Saint Laurent and Narciso Rodriguez are sure to take notice.
Paul

With Aggy's moment all but over with (it's sad, but true), a new peroxide nymph is desperately in demand! Oh, and her name is PAUL, people. Come on.

I am absolutely BANANAS for this month's Vogue Italia cover.
Shot by my forever favorite, Steven Meisel, it feautures up-and-comer Viktoriya Sasonkina looking both strikingly ethereal and classically refined. The lone caption of "Dressing" is pure and very knowing fashion wit, exudeing the old-school elegance of the photo.
I feel like people often forget that dressing is what fashion is primarily "about".
As for the model, a presence like this solidifes her as a new favorite. She booked shows here and there last season, but I immediately wrote her off as a younger, harder-looking version of Stam. I stand corrected, for the ability to command a photo such as that seen above is a talent rare beheld among today's brood of beauties. The editorial inside is also starmaking, I hear.

This shoot caught my eye not simply because of Natalia and Mesiel's consistently ingenius work, but because of its reference to one of my absolute favorite artists: Tamara de Lempicka.
Note this photo's remarkable resemblance to her "Romana de la Salle".

Meisel's references always translate into innovative and hauntingly beautiful fashion editorials, whether it be YouTube, fifties housewives, or art deco. He is truly a favorite, as is the ageless Natalia. Bravo! And brava!

Recessive Genial

Alright.
We're in the midst of a recession. In the long run, this is quite blatently not a good thing. Genius, I know. I've not the political prowess to discuss the specifics in detail, but I'd be blind not to notice the toll it's taking on the individuals around me and also what effects it will probably take on "society" (yes, that word is very much overused, but I think it applies here).
According to political analysts (most of these predictions came from the fabulous Radar Magazine), we'll soon see, among other things, a revival of feminism (hi, Hilary), the increased production of horror movies (hi, everyinsufferablefilmatthelocalcinema), and feminine men held as ideals (hi, Chace and Zach. Coffee?)
This is, of course, a fashion blog...and I would be outright lying if I said I wasn't giddy about the recession's effect on the industry.
During a recession, people cut back. Yes, you knew that. There is an air of conservativeness, of preservation. Naturally, as we saw in the seventies and thirties (R E C E S S I O NAL PERIODS), hemlines drop.
Modesty becomes key.
Minimalism makes reigns.
The color pallette mutes.
The cut and quality of clothing is the focus.
These are a few key elements of what I consider "taste". That is a very pretentious thing to say, yes, but let's take a look back to some fashion snapshots from, say, the end of 1999. The economy was leagues better then. The world, in my opinion, possessed a brighter future. However, with this security came excess. Tell me what you see.
The closing look from Dolce and Gabbana's Spring/Summer 2000 collection.
Here's a closing look from the same season from Yves Saint Laurent, a house whose refinement and powerful elegance is legendary. This isn't as bad, but something like this was expected to sell.
And, finally, from the notorious Versace runway (of the same season, no less) the famous J.Lo dress.
Now, I'm not saying this is a bad way of dressing. It's obviously not my taste, but my taste is certainly not a unanimous one. Note the differences in these looks from the same houses (in previous order) from the recent Spring/Summer 2008 season. I wouldn't show the Fall/Winter 2008 because of the obvious differences between seasons (although there was all that buzz about "seasonless dressing"...)

Yes, I acknowledge the fact that I'm rediculous. I'm a hyper fashion-conscious, morbidly body-conscious, and witheringly self-conscious male teenager who cultivates grandiose gripes to plague his really "pretty-alright" life. I'm smart enough, but not much of an intellectual; my mind usually off somewhere in the ballpark of what I'm wearing tomorrow or how I can lose another three pounds.
As it would have it, one of my dearest friends is a sassy, self-lovin' (thanks, alliteration) intellectual who wears what's clean (and usually fabulous, no matter how unaware she may be of it) and takes shit from none. She's healthy and curvacious (not, eherm, hungry, as I'd put it) and refreshingly grounded...which is not to say that she doesn't like a little bit of the ol' glamour every now and then.
Her name is Lizzie Paul and I truly do love her with all my heart.
She was excited to be blogged, about, to say the least, but there truly is something about her that can relate back to all this fashion business. She's above the glitz, the glamour. The skinny. The incessant updates, changes, and trends. Yet, at the same time, she embodies what queens have heralded for centuries as "fabulous".
A self-proclaimed hippie, she rummages through mounds of the finest thrift offerings (sometimes with yours truly) and dresses daily in bohemian splendour. I'm not talking Delia's, or Urban Outfitters that matter. More Janis Joplin, less Kate Moss.
I've often met up with her at the train stop, a sheepish smile on her hellodarlingI'mafortiesmoviestar face as she asks if "she looks alright"?
I tell her she looks extraordinary because she does.
Over the past year, I've gained the confidence and tenacity that I've now in part because of her. She was a steady source of assurance and support when I was in the process of coming out last fall. She knows me better than I know myself, and is the first person my age that I've befriended that I feel may just HAPPEN to know better than I. We have our tiffs, yes, but you would too with your big sister/Jewish mother/divorcee/anti-hag.
She's magnetic.
I'm what some call a "fashion person". Lizzie is not. People lament over their style, their identity, the opinions of others. Oftentimes, it's percieved that these are what embody "fashion". Lizzie hasn't tried like I have, made it her interest, blogged about it. Yet here she is, a style icon among my friends (that sounds cheesy, but I would not say it if I did not mean it). It's conscious for me. Unconscious for her.
Go with your instincts.

I've still a lot to learn about in terms of construction, but I'm not just enamoured with fashion for the vampant glitz and inevitable glamour. The way one dresses is a serious matter.. It serves as a bit of a preview to "who you are", to use a cliché...or, rather, it should be. I believe folks in general, especially residents of the good 'ol U.S of A, don't take nearly enough pride/put enough effort into how they present themselves sartorially. You're smart? You're distinguished? You're fun-loving? You're random? Show us. Show them! Very few feelings, in my opinion, hold a candle to that of walking down the street with the sheer confidence and assurance that you indeed LOOK amazing. It takes effort, and sure, a small streak of exhibitionism, but being well-dressed is never a negative. Oh, and screw "the price". Thrift stores, people! Sample sales! You'd be quite surprised. No, really. I never spend more than $20 on anything if I don't have to. You just need to look a bit harder. In an age obsessed with imageimageFUCKINGimage, why not craft a special one?

As for my own personal stlye (you KNEW that was coming, now didn't you?), I'd classify it as a vicious cyclone of minimalism and maximalism. If it's not finely tailored, it better be romantically deconstructed. If it's not in a stark color pallette, it better possess an explosion of hues. If it's not skintight, give me loose, loose, loose. Etcetera! Intellectual austerity in dress shows you have restraint. You're not exhibiting yourself, and frankly, it'd seem you've nothing approve. Confidenceconfidenceconfidence. At times, though, a daring and romantic piece keeps the masses from getting bored. This sounds pretentious, but I'm just being specific. Really, whatever looks good! I'll wear it if I look unanimously fabulous. I'm also a fan of sillhouettes from the twenties, the fifties, the sixties, and the eighties. Older is better, and I love a good antique. I suppose it's pretty eclectic...but all in all I am very picky. A picture's worth a thousand words...so here are some designer looks from recent seasons that reflect how I think a woman should dress (or, in some ways, how I would dress if I were a woman!). The Trials of Fash-Mags

I suppose that when a sartorial sycophant such as myself blows $15.00 on an imported fashion mag (Vogue Italia or Paris, for example) the justification for such a purchase is a burning, dutiful dedication to the industry itself. The masses, I assume, would scoff at blowing nearly a Jackson on something that usually runs someone $3.50 and has B-Spears' mug plastered on the cover. THESE ARE VALID POINTS, YES. Just hear me out. In the last month or so, I've picked up the following:

It really is rediculous, is it not? I don't need these. I can look at the editorials online, and the writing only goes so far. I suppose there's a thrill in buying fashion magazines, something far less superficial than the glitz and glamour of what lies splattered upon the pages inside. It feels to me like a ticket aboard, a way of enriching your level of "fashion-awareness" if not only for a month. It really is a community, however diverse and separted its inhabitants are. These glossy pamphlets feed my glamorous longings, fantasies...as well as inspire me to explore and further cultivate my tastes. I've got design school on the list for next year, after all. Seeing the clothing you love displayed and fussed over in such a high-octane way VALIDATES the hours you spend obsessing over it (guilty...)!

It's the keyhole us fashion-plebians possess to look through into the circus inside.

It's worth it, people.
